Synthesis and metabolism of SCFAs in the gastrointestinal tract. In the gut, the intestinal microbial metabolites of SCFAs, acetate, propionate and butyrate, are synthesised through different pathways under the action of different flora and are involved in modulating various metabolic processes within the organism
