Total score derived from the summation of the scores of the answers of the 24 items, which correspond to: none: 0, mild: 1, moderate: 2, severe: 3, and extreme: 4. To compare the WOMAC scores between the SPMs group (N = 23) and placebo group (N = 28), the Mann–Whitney U test (basal) and the Student's t-test (weeks 4, 8, and 12) were used.
